Crane School District’s Nutritional Department

Meeting the Growing Nutritional Needs of the Community

Yuma, Arizona – To meet the growing nutritional needs of our community, Crane School District’s Nutritional Services Department will provide free meals to all children (children 18 and / or younger eat for free, adults $2.50 for breakfast and $3.50 for lunch) during the district’s winter intersession. The latest census estimate shows that 19.7% of Yuma County total population are living below the poverty line (Yuma Regional Medical Center CHNA, 2019). This is above the proportion found nationally. Among just children (ages 0 to 17), this percentage in Yuma County is 28.2%, this represent almost 15,000 children (Yuma Regional Medical Center CHNA, 2019). With these growing numbers, Crane School District understands the deep need of providing high-quality nutritional meals across Crane School District and to serve our communities in the areas of great need.

To help support our students and families during the winter intersession, Crane School District’s Nutritional Services Department will provide breakfast and lunch during the 3-week break. The winter intersession is a wonderful time for many families across Yuma to reconnect, celebrate and create warm memories that will last a lifetime. During that time, Crane schools are closed for 3-weeks starting December 16ththrough January 3rd, 2020. The winter intersession can create nutritional hardship for many of our families and Crane School District would like to remove that added pressure. “I am very excited that our school cafeterias will be open for free breakfast and lunch during winter intersession. Many of our families count on their children being able to eat two meals each day for free at school. When we go on intersession, these additional meals to our families’ grocery bills can be an extra burden to budgets that are already tight, making the holidays even more stressful”, said Mrs. Bobbie Henry, Principal of Pueblo Elementary.

Starting December 16th, 2019 through January 3rd, 2020 Crane School District’s Nutritional Department will provide free meals to all children (children 18 and / or younger eat for free, adults $2.50 for breakfast and $3.50 for lunch): Breakfast will be served from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. and Lunch from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. operations will be closed during the 4-major holidays Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.This is a great opportunity to ensure that our students and their families have meals during our 3-week winter break. We have so many students and families that eat breakfast and lunch during our summer food program. It’s sad to think that students could go hungry during our 3-week winter break. I am so thankful that our nutrition department was able to make this happen”, said Mrs. Sheila Mendoza, Principal of Salida del Sol.So that Crane meets the needs of our large landscape, there will be multiple campuses across the district participating, families can visit Gary A. Knox, Pueblo Elementary, Ronald Reagan Elementary, Salida del Sol Elementary and Valley Horizon Elementaryduring the times provided.
